Ordering a certificate with conditions?
« on: Thursday 28 April 05 10:00 BST (UK) »
I've done my best to narrow a birth down, and Freebmd claims to have all the registrations for this particular year. Nothing fits exactly, but there is a reasonable candidate ...

Is it possible to order a certificate saying you only want it if it has 'x' as the father?

I'm having to do it from NZ, by fax and giving my Visa number. Do they charge extra for this?

Hi Ros

Ordering online, there is a reference Checking form.

You can specify one or more of the following

Date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy)
Place of birth
Father's surname
Father's forenames
Mother's maiden surname
Mother's forenames
Other checking point

I think that if they check the reference you give them and it doesn't match the information you have given inthe reference check then they will only charge you £4.

I would be very specific in your fax that you want the application checked against the reference you give.

cheers

Paul

Hi Ros,

Paul's right but I think they only charge £3 as a search fee if they can't find the right certificate.

Why do you have to order by fax, though? You can order certificates online (www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate/index.asp) from outside the UK – and they don't charge any more for applications from overseas, either ;D.

Hope you find what you want.

Hi Ros

If you order direct from the local registry office, they will check and probably won't charge if it's not the correct one.  You will just need to check the the relevant registry office has online ordering facilities.

Best wishes

Thanks all for your helpful advice. Just to report that while googling around I found someone on genforum who seemed to be looking for the same family. I have just rec'd from her an exact birth and baptism date for my man - with both parents named! Now I can send off for the cert. in total confidence!

Thanks again,

Ros
