Backbarrow is just of the modern A590, in Cumbria,
a few minutes walk from Haverthwaite, depending on how fast you walk,

for church records for the time scale you are looking at they would come under Lancashire,
Gunning County Down,Kneale Isle of Man,Riddle Tynemouth,Bibby Kendal/Bradford,Colenso Penzance/Barrow-in-Furness,Steele Corney Fell,Chapman Ely,Dawes Alfreton,Blamire Westmoreland and Ulverston

You will notice in the 1891 census that Bare Syke House was the next house.

A house is labelled Bare Syke at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=335500,484500

Choose (on right) the 1971 1:2500 map

I think it must be this house http://tinyurl.com/5tw5h2n

If you don't believe me, see http://tinyurl.com/64wfyrs :D

I'm sure Bare Syke Cottage must be adjacent, perhaps the one to the left.  In fact if you look at the 1913 1:2500 map, you'll see the other neighbouring house Brewer Wood Cottage a short distance to the SW. :)
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Was wondering if you were referring to William a photographer in Eastbourne because he is supposed to have a brother called George therefore Thomas is unlikely to be his father. Our Thomas did live at that address, Causeway & Bower Cottages. Thomas & Ann had four children Ann 1852, Thomas 1855, William 1858 all born in Liverpool brother James 1860 at Causeway End, Colton. Do you think that William was a portrait artist in Carlisle because I think his father was not Thomas but William? (1881c)

No response...... so maybe William Atkinson was brother to my Great Grandfather James born 1860 Colton - maiden name of Thomas' wife Ann Rhodes.
