Winterbourne Bassett - BOURTON & TEAGLE
« on: Sunday 05 June 11 20:02 BST (UK) »
I see that in Look-up offers section "Charlesworth" offers to look up christenings and burials in Winterbourne Bassett.

I'd be very greateful if they or someone else could help me.

I am looking for members of the BOURTON (or Borton) and TEAGLE (numerous spellings!) families from Winterbourne Bassett in the 1700s.

My 4xgreat grandmother Priscilla BOURTON (as "BURTON") married George GRAY in Bath in 1798, but was christened in Clyffe Pypard in 29th November 1778, daughter of Edward BOURTON and Ann TEAGLE.

Their oldest daughter Rebecca GRAY was apparently christened in Winterbourne Bassett on 20th Jan 1799.

Priscilla's parents, Edward BOURTON and Nanny TEAGLE were apparently married by banns in Winterbourne Bassett on 7th Nov 1775, both being described as "of the parish".

I'd be very grateful if you could look for their christenings and any members of the BOURTON or TEAGLE families who might be related to them at about this time or before.

(I'd also be fascinated to hear about any more of George GRAY & Priscilla's children who might have been christened there, although I am not expecting any!)

Thank you very much indeed! :)

Therese.

Hi,

I noticed the marriage of George and Priscilla in Bath, and wondered if these four baptisms in Winsley(seven miles from Bath) could be siblings of Rebecca

Isaac: 17 Feb. 1805  of George Gray and Priscilla
Eliza: 29 Apr. 1807    of  "           "       "        "
Virtue: 9 Jul. 1809         "             "                "
Henrietta: 22 Jun. 1817    "         "               "

Also found a marriage in Cliffe Pypard of an Ann Teagle and Isaac Spackman 30 Jun 1739.
A baptism of a Rebecca Teagle in Cliffe Pypard 2 Feb. 1758, to a Samuel Teagle and Rebecca

Could these be any relations,

Yes.  The Grays are other siblings of Rebecca.  Apparently there was also a George.

I think I have seen the other Teagle marriage in Phillimores.  I have not yet figured out how/if it might be related!

Thanks for the other Teagle baptism.  It might or might not be relevant!  Is that the only other one in Winterbourne Bassett?

Thanks!

Thanks West!

I wonder whether that is the same Edmund Borten of Winterbourne Bassett that Phillimores shows marrying Mary Spackman in Clyffe Pypard on 5th Oct 1760.

Is there a death shown for Elizabeth Borten/Bourton/etc, wife of Edmund, shortly before that?

Thanks again,

Therese.

Hi

Is Mary Spackman the daughter of the above Isaac Spackman and Ann Teagle?

Just checked an Isaac and Ann Spackman had a daughter Mary ,baptized 10May 1743 in Broad-Hinton.

Hi there, sorry I didn't see your post - for some reason I didn't get a notification so thanks for the PM.

There is one Edward Borton baptised 25th July 1756, son of Edmund and Eliz.

There is an Edmond Burton baptised 23rd April 1733, son of Edward and Jane.

Edward's siblings:

John Bortorn baptised 26th Oct 1734. s/of Edward and Jane.

Thomas Boorton baptised 7th Sept 1736. s/of Edward and Jane.

Jane Borton baptised 17th September 1738. d/of Edward and Jane.

Elizabeth Borton baptised same date. d/of Edward and Jane.

John Borton baptised 26th Apr s/of Edward & Jane

Honr Borton baptised same date s/of Edward & Jane

Mary Borton bap 14th Feb 1743/4 (this is what the transcript says - maybe the original is unclear) - daughter of Edward and Jane

Burials:

There is an Edward Borton who was buried 30th March 1765 ( possibly the grandfather/husband of Jane)

Edmund Burton was buried 10th May 1808 '80' years old.

Jane Borton w/Edward buried 23rd August 1758

I can't find anything for Teagle in baptisms or burials.

Hope that helps!

Thanks very much for doing this - very useful indeed.

BTW - I didn't get a notification about your reply either, so maybe Rootschat isn't working properly.

I think the 1743/4 is because years used to not to be counted from Jan-Jan - rather like financial years now.  This would be 1744 in our calandar.

(Can't remember when years used to begin/end exactly - end March?)

Presumably you mean "Edmund's siblings" in line 4?

Does "Honr" mean "Honour" do you think?

Curious about Ann/Nanny Teagle being "otp" in the marriage record.  There clearly were Teagles about in Clyffe Pypard - but apparently not here.  The definition of "otp" often seems rather vague, doesn't it.

I may get back to you with more questions when I've looked at what this does to my tree!

Thanks again - really excellent.  :)

Hi there, yes Edmund's siblings  :)

I really don't know what Honr stands for - as it's a boy I was wondering if it was supposed to be Henry.  Looking through the transcripts although the parents' names are sometimes abbreviated the child's name is written out in full, so not sure what happened there.

No problem if you have any more queries.
