1575 Birth
« on: Monday 06 June 11 09:48 BST (UK) »
I have found a reference at an ancestry public tree to a Nicholas Watkins born 1575 in Monmouth. He went on to marry  Margery Colwell. A son (Sir) David Watkins was born 1599 in Upton Buckinghamshire. He and his sister married into the Fleetwood family of Gloucestershire. Another sister Alice married Sir Thomas Saunders.
Any ideas as to where I might find a birth record from that far back(1575)

Havn't found the birth but almost better; Parents ;D. Dad was William Watkins nigh Ragland in Com Monmouthshire and Elizabeth  and William Collwall of Gloucestor. I'm assuming "nigh Ragland" is "from Raglan". Let me know if I am off base there, please

nigh means near. Parish records for Raglan start in 1722 ar the Gwent record office. According to my copy of Cofrestri Plwyf Cymru/Parish Registers of Wales, in 1781 there was 'an old register here that goes back as very near the time of registers being first established', but it looks to have been lost.

old-fashioned English or poetic, not Old English, that's before about 1100. Can't see a will at the National Library of Wales for either man.

The National Archives have a will for Sir David Watkins of Covent Garden dated 1651

Without parish records or evidence from wills, I'd be tempted tp think that the tree might have its roots in someone's imagination.

Info came from Google Books The Visitation of London anno Domine 1633,1634 1635  1883 page 332 Sir Henry Saint George, Sir richard... also The Harleian Society same year and same page so ? a copy of same info ? There is a full copy on the net as well. Gloucester Archives have a  defamation case from 1614 but they want close to $90 for a copy( and that is with our $ at a record high) so alas it is staying there. Also the genealogical data for same site list a William Collwall husbandman 1574  from ?Will? and Elizabeth Collwall 1595 ?will? of Boddington /Barrow. Was just going back for another look see about the will bit as it does not show up on a search
