DROMAHAIR Co Leitrim ?
« on: Monday 06 June 11 13:53 BST (UK) »
Hi I am looking for information on DROMAHAIR . My Ggrandmother Catherine McFee Listed her father as Patrick McFee farmer from here on her marriage cert in Haddigton Rd Church in 1896. I would like to research the family but I cannot find any Mcfee's in the 1901 census in Leitrim . Any help will be much appreciated. He mother was Mary Mitchell.

There are no McFees in 1911 census either.
Are you quite sure about the Mc prefix.

I have contacts with Co.Leitrim & never heard of the name.
However I knew of Fee.
It may be fairly limited but can check it on the census.
Let me know how youre progressing
I am sorry but my email address is not working

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0dqj/ is the nearest I can find... you don't give their religion but these were RC!

Hi many thanks for the information but I don't think this is her family as Catherine  married Thomas Thompson in Dublin in 1896 .

She was living in Donnybrook in 1901 and Ringsend in 1911.

She was born in Dromahair in 1876 .

She had an older sister Mary b1873, a brother Patrick jnr b1875 and a younger sister Beesey b1879. There may have been others but I have not found them .
(Beesey is what is on the birth registar) I have never come across that name before have you?

On her marriage cert Catherine ( Kate) put her mark so she could not read or write and she was in service . The priest spelt her name McFay but I could only find birth details for McFee. I am presuming she had a strong accent and the priest spelt as he heard.

Her parents were Patrick McFee a farmer from Dromahair and her mother was Mary Mitchell. I am guessing they were born in the 1850's.
Is there a RC church in that area that goes back that far? Thanks again for your help.

Did you check the other MacAfees in Drumrane?

The RC church at Dromahair seems to be called Drumlease. Copies of their births from 1859 – 1879, and marriages 1859 – 81 are at PRONI, Belfast. Presumably there are also copies in the National Library in Dublin. These are not on-line. If you can’t access them in Belfast or Dublin, it should be possible to order copies of the microfilms in to your nearest LDS library.

Griffiths Valuation records a John, James & Bridget McFee all renting land in Drumrane townland in 1857 . That’s about 5 or 6 miles south west of Dromahair.

The name seems to be spelled McAfee in the 1901 census. 2 families there then:
