What an unusual photo!  Seems the tree is the star of the scene - did the scientific institute director do research into trees or something?  Is the lady on the left expecting a little twiglet of her own do you think?

Caps crossed all social strata. They covered all heads from kings to beggars.
The cowgirl's hat looks like a style of the Shako as worn by some military Regiments, women were fond of military styles when it came to fashion.

Thanks to all of you for your comments.

I too think it a rather strange photo.
Don't know about the twiglet Heather. The scientific director had nothing to do with this lot - I mixed the posting up.
This photo was taken by a son of the family - the brother of the LADY in the cowboy style hat and youngest son of the man with the pipe. He loved to pose people in the most unusual situations but I'm not sure he meant the tree to have pride of place ??? ???.
The old man and his pipe have been posted on several different occasions - he seems to have had it with him all the time.

Thanks Jim for your comments on the headwear for the photo which was meant to be with this text!

Hope someone will still do a clean and tidy for me.
