Why more likely "N K "?

N. B. was a common abbreviation for North Britain. North Britain was in common use as a synonym for Scotland. This person 's birthplace was listed as Glamis, Forfarshire - hardly a case of Not Known!

Linda, are you able to post an image of the two letters?

I don't understand why there is any question that the letters are anything other than N and B, however an image may help convince the doubters.

There are many examples to be found via a google search, but this is the first one I came across:

'North Britain' also included Northumberland and Cumbria, however as the place of birth was Glamis, Forfarshire, I think in the case of Linda's ancestors, the meaning is very obviously NB as in Scotland, as that is where Glamis, Forfarshire is located ....  ;)

No it doesn't. I've done a lot of transcribing - FreeCEN; FreeBMD; etc - it definitely says N.B.
