Well it always pays to keep looking.
Ancestry has a useful feature which flags up people with research overlap.

I noticed such a link when I was re-checking Elizabeth Tibbs records -
I will need to visit Woodhorn Archive to check these facts but they seem to tie in with census material (and someone had clearly looked into the facts)

Elizabeth married Edmund Marshall (a collier) in Horton St. Mary's (not far from Cowpen) on 23/4/1871.
Elizabeth Marshall died in Burradon on 6/10/1871

Edmund's first marriage was to Margaret Redford (relation??) in 1845 when he was 19.
Edmund died in Burradon in March 1899 after remarrying again (Sarah Redford in 1874)

So in census 51&61 his spouse is Margaret Marshall, 81&91 is Sarah Marshall ...
and Elizabeth just missed out on appearing as Elizabeth Marshall on 1871 census by 1month!

The Horton and Burradon records does not show up on any on-line search that I have access to so I assume that it is local knowledge/archive searches that have discovered this record.

Edmund was b. 1826 in North Blyth and d. 1899 Burradon
All census records have him in and around the Blyth coalfield.

So, Mystery solved.  Elizabeth never appeared on the 1881/91 census after all.
Now all that remains is to find the cause of her death at 42 years old.

Thanks to all who took the time to look into her life.
