Hi ScouseBoy,

Just spoke again to the lady at the Gazette and she said that lots of troops passed through Weeton Barracks, and it is likely that the newspaper photographer covered this area. Unfortunately she is unable to search their records for this photograph as they are not digitalised; just boxed up in date order. Without the exact date, she won't be able to find it.

I think that I will just have to wait for his records to arrive and hope it will clarify when and where he served! The only time he mentioned his time in the Army was when he told my Nan that he was once escorting a dignitary/official on his motorbike. All of the troops were lined up to honour this person, and were ordered to put down their arms. The motorbike veered off course, and he ran over everything they had put on the floor!

Thankyou for all of your help and replies,

Alice

That last story sounds like the steamroller episode of Dads army ;D

Reference his Army Number It would have been individual by WW2 and not Regimental like WW1 where lads got two or three numbers if they changed units.

Good luck and let us know how you get on with records

Just a thought....

What service number do you have for him???
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Quote from: ADM199

The Somerset Light Infantry had Service numbers from 5662001 through to 5718000 so if the number you have for him his original Regiment would be the S.L.I.

Quote

The only number I have for him is 5681163, which thanks to Brian I now know is his service number for the 30th S.L.I. only :)
