This is a bandolier, worn by mounted troops to carry their small arms ammunition. An expert may be able to say when it went out of use, to help with dating the photo.

I agree with ady, my father enlisted in 1928 and he was in the Royal Corps of Signals. I have a photo of him and he is dressed exactly the same.

Hi Alice.

sorry, but these are definitely photos from the First World War

Errr...No, not the first one, deffo

Heres an idea....The first photo could be of Royal Engineers who were also employed as signallers in the Great War....The Royal Corps of Signals which is the cap badge the guys in the first photo are wearing was formed in June 1920(so it dates after then) the guy on the right is wearing medal ribbons So after 1921/22 when they were all issued
So maybe originally he was in one of the Royal Engineer Signal Companys who then became Royal Corps of Signals after 1920...?

Have a look at top two on this link.

The first pic is 1922 ptn uniform, so CANNOT be any earlier than that date...

Hello everyone,

Thankyou for all of the messages, 1920's fits in perfectly with what we know about my GG Uncle joining up underage before being 'found out', leaving, and re-joining in the Second World War.

If anyone has a few moments to spare, would you mind casting an eye over the photograph in the link below? As these pictures are earlier than I expected - we thought they were from the second time he enlisted in 1941 - I'm not sure about the date of this one:

...especially as I think I can spot a couple of the gentlemen in these photo's in this large group one.

Thankyou for your time :)
