Hi.
See the attached jpg of the entry Cithern from Grove's Dictionary of Musical instruments, available online (if you've the patience to wait for all the pages to load - it's in 6 vols...) at www.archive.org . Grove ducks dealing with the ancient Greek form of the instrument, and the entry for Zither deals only with the modern folksie-type instrument, but you might find the stuff on the basically 16/17th cent cithern helpful.
Btw, this dictionary's over a hundred years old. It was updated in the 1990s? by the 'New Grove' which is online only by subscription, but just possibly your local main public library will have the hard-copy edtn - in 20 vols! plus acres of spin-offs - on its shelves.
Regards,
Birtle

Perhaps the most famous zither tune? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZZHq2JSnnE
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

There's a sample of cittern music that you can listen to on www.amazon.co.uk . Just type   cittern 1597  in the search box and select the item featuring David Munrow. Click on the image of the record sleeve and then on the next page you can choose to play the sample. It's an MP3 and can be listened to with Windows Media Player etc.
