I think you have the right Matthew Barnes/Barron and it is probably down to the Irish accent and the way the registrar heard the name

Did Matthew actually sign the marriage certificate or was it 'his mark' ?

With his occupation to do with ship building then he could be from Belfast and you might find him on the 1901 Irish census

There isn't a signature. It just says (signed) at the top.

I'm trying to find him on the 1901 Scots census.  Where do I find the Irish census?

What age was he on his marriage certificate?

He was 23.

Got Matthew Barron's death cert and he is our Matthew Barnes.  Mother Ann Gallagher.

In 1931 he is listed as being 46.

Have Margaret Barron's death and have discovered they had a daughter Helen.

On the cert it has her mother as, Margaret Graham previously McKendrick, nee Welsh.

I am right in assuming she married the McKendrick before John Graham, yes?
