Thomas Heathcock Captain
« on: Saturday 18 June 11 20:14 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I have recently discovered the death record shown below:

Casualty Details
Name:    HEATHCOCK, THOMAS
Initials:    T
Nationality:    United Kingdom
Rank:    Captain
Regiment/Service:    East Yorkshire Regiment
Unit Text:    7th Bn.
Age:    23
Date of Death:    10/07/1916
Additional information:    Son of the late William and of E. A. Heathcock, of Grangetown, Yorks. B.A. (Cambridge) 1914.
Casualty Type:    Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference:    Sp. Mem. 19.
Cemetery:    FLATIRON COPSE CEMETERY, MAMETZ

Thomas was mentioned in a lecture I attended today at Teesside Archives, and I beleive I may be related to him.  I am related to Heathcocks in the Middlesbrough area, so I suspect a connection is likely.  According to his school admission papers he was born on 10 January 1893 and lived with Grangetown with his father William, a labourer.

Can anyone spot Thomas in the census please, and also his father, going back to his parents?  I suspect then I may be able to find a connection as asertain whether he is a relation or not.

Thanks,

Peter

Thank you.  Hmm I am not sure now about this due to the birth places.

Is there a way to see William with his parents?  I have looked on the 1881 but no births for a William Heathcock, born 1871 in Swinton.

What's wrong with the birth places?

Births, March qtr 1893
Middlesborough district (includes Eston)    vol 9d, page 576
Heathcock, Thomas

December qtr 1870
Rotherham district (includes Swinton)    vol 9c, page 563

Can't find either William or his sister Susan in 1881.
At least, I presume Susan Hardisty is his sister!

Added: Yes she is!

Middlesborough qtr     vol 9d, page 1083

Hardisty, Charles Robert
Heathcock, Susan

Ah, I see.  I didn't explain myself.

My Heathcock family come from Dudley, Worcestershire.  So, if there is a connection it would mean now looking for William and Susan's parents, but this seems difficult as I can't find them on 1881 also.

Hmmm if this is the case then I suspect that there is not an inital family connection.  Although Dudley and Kingswinford are close, I can't place Thomas Heathcock (born c1830) in my tree.

Thanks for you help here.  It seems coincidence that these two families with the same name unusal name moved to Middlesbrough.

However, in a last attempt to find (alebit tentative) connection, can you please spot Thomas Heathcock, born 1830 in 1851/1841.

Thanks, and I expected this search to much simpler than how it has turned into.

Captain Thomas Heathcock was my mother's cousin.  His mother was my grandmother's sister (and I was always given to understand Thomas was an only child).  Their family name was Spencer.  I believe their father married twice.  Am interested to find out why Thomas was mentioned in the lecture you attended at Teesside Uni.

Hi Thomas Heathcock was mentioned in a lectur at Teesside ARCHIVES due to his attendance at Kirkleatham Grammer School (Sir William Turner School).  He was an outstanding pupil, as a working class boy from Grangetown gain a scholarship to Oxford.  He was tragically killed in WW1.  The lecturer gave a speech on the school and he was mentioned.  There was also a photograph of him.

Does this help?

And do you know if we have a family connection?  I would love to find one.
