St Johns Wood Barracks
« on: Tuesday 21 June 11 16:21 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to trace my Great Great Grandad's military history and all I know is that he was a military driver based at St John's Wood Barracks, Ordnance Road, Marylebone, London at the time of the 1881 census.
What I would really like to know is what regiment was based at the barracks at that time. I have found out that the Kings Troop, Royal Horse Artillery was based there but they have only been active since 1947 so obviously it cannot be them. I cannot seem to find anything out on the internet, I was wondering whether there is a website I can look on or whether anyone knows who was based there?.
Would greatly appreciate any help anyone can give me. :)

pity that the Enumerators page wasnt helpful in mentiong the incumbent Regiment - altho as commanded by a Major, it wasnt a full complement (8 pages, 20 per page)

That Major can be found via Google and is stated as:-

William Southwell Curzon
, maj. R.H. Art - which I take to be Royal Horse Artillery  (lots of Bombardiers & Gunners are listed)

http://genealogy.links.org/links-cgi/readged?/home/ben/camilla-genealogy/current+c-curzon12476+2-2-0-1-0

Try looking for your man in FindMyPasts military records - or the Nat Archives WO files ...

I cannot help with the regiment, but I have looked in the Army records on FindMyPast and can only see one William Page born in Cambridgeshire, he was not born until 1865. I have been through the others with no year or birth place indexed, none of them appear to be you man.

Perhaps someone else will come up with some help for you.

The 1881 Census was taken on the night of 3 April.

The Times, April 4, 1881

The A Battery of Brigade Royal Horse, til recently quartered at St John's Wood Barracks, has left for Ireland and has been replaced at St John's Wood by G Battery O Brigade Royal Horse Artillery.
