Hi Janette, and other interested readers,
A renewed delve into Amy's husband Alfred (b.9/10/1878 Rochdale lanc's d.17/05/1973 Masterton, NI ) finds that his marriage certificate did not quite tell the truth insofar that his mother was Dora nee Higginson, not Muriel Morris. His father was indeed George born in 1855 in Beverley Yorks the son of Robert & Sarah, who had 4 other sons James, William,Alfred and edward, and 2 daughters Mary and Jane. Sarah becamed widowed in1869.
After marrying in Rochdale Geortge and Dora settled in Rochdale for a short while.
in 1883 George (28) & Dora (25) decided to emigrate with his young family, Alfred being 2 and newborn Edward aboard the SS Pathan which docked in Albany (1/8/1883), Adelaide, melbourne (13/8/1883), and Sydney.
I would welcome a little help, from melbourne onwards, to put together his movements within NZ up to masterton. Its possible in mitigation that Alfred didnt remember his birth mother Dora.
I'm not entirely clear thereafter A;freds marriage in 1917 in Wellington , but i do remember Amy and cousin Gloria visiting us in 1950, and still have a veneered 12" ruler she bought me as a present. I digress.
This little batch of info transpired after seeing 2 new co-respondents to the surname search patterns, within the UK, and originally thinking it didnt relate to me, but i posed the question to the forum.
I do find this trawling fascinating. However previously i had made the mistake of presuming he emigrated as an adult, and direct to NZ, and of course the family did neither.
