"fallen woman" !
« on: Wednesday 22 June 11 11:36 BST (UK) »
At the end of the 19th century one of my female ancestors by the name of Dillon probably carried an illegitimate child. I know the family put her away in a home run by nuns. She would have lived in Pollerton or Pellerton road in County Carlow. Would anyone know the name of the institution or convent which accepted "fallen women" ! Apparently the unfortunate young girl had to stay in the convent unless a member of the family came to let her out.

The story goes in the case of my poor ancestor that she begged her sister later in life to come and release her and she refused! Shame on her.
She was reported as being sick and then as mentally deficient to account for the disappearance. She may have died in the early thirties or late twenties. Do any of the convents have online records of the inmates?

Dublin : King, Burgess, Toole, Martin, Keogh
Wicklow : Toole, Burgess, , Mc Loughlin, Doyle,  Warren,
Armagh: Reynolds Vallely
Monoghan: Burgess
Keogh. Delgany : Doyle White and possibly McLoughlin
Carlow: Dillon, Delaney
Unknown county: Sweeney and Moran. Sweeneys went to Lpool 1840s and Michael Moran 1820s

You could try the magdalene laundries site at http://www.magdalenelaundries.com/name.htm

They are collating information on some of the institutions where women were sent.

Thank you for the links but I already have this information. I think one of the girls most likely Catherine was the one who got placed in a home. I know she stayed there for over 45 years - well if my relative is to be believed as she is working from memory. I know that she remained in a home of some kind in Carlow itself.
Does anyone know of a mental institution, or religious institution which would have existed from about 1901 to at least 1970?

Thanks once again for your kind contributions all.
