Hi Will -

You will need to know which Battalion you are looking for - as there were lots of them and as you will see from the website Johnny mentions - they were all over the place.

Are you looking for a particular named soldier? Do you have his service number? service records? medal card? medals?

Milly
McBride (Monaghan, Manchester), Derbyshire (Bollington,Cheshire), Knight (Newcastle,Staffs), Smith (Chorley, Lancs & Ireland), Tipladay (Manchester & Yorkshire) ,Steadman (Madeley,Shropshire), Steele (Manchester,Glasgow), Parkinson (Wigan, Lancashire), Lovatt, Cornes & Turner (Staffs) Stott (Oldham, Lancs). All ended up Ardwick, Manchester

1st Battalion, RDF did not reach France until March 1916, having been in Egypt and the Dardanelles.  2nd Battalion reached France  on 22 Aug 1914. Of the Service (wartime) battalions, 6th and 7th were not in France until 1918.  8th and 9th reached Havre in Dec 1915 , 10th in Aug 1916.  The remainder did not serve overseas.
The 2nd looks the most likely as you have been told, but your man may not have been in the original party, and may have been in a later draft, hving trained in a reserve battalion.
The 2nd were at Gravesend when war broke out.  Drafts were probably sent via English channel ports, rather than from Dublin, in my opinion.

his medal card shows him Discharged 8/8/1916 and awarded a Silver War Badge on the SWB List B/147. These are available at the National Archives at Kew and I believe they carry extra info eg. Battalion.

SOme RDF with similar numbers straddle 1st and 2nd Batt.
