Thomas Huntley Wood Royal Navy 1875 to 1897
« on: Thursday 23 June 11 15:33 BST (UK) »
I have a Thomas Huntley Wood born 1868 in Lyme Regis.. he was in the Navy for 24 years then joined the Coastguard in Queensferry, Scotland
I think that his service number was 124487 as this is shown on National Archives ADM 188 / 163
What I am trying to establish is if he won any medals or was in any conflict etc.

For interest the face on Plyers Navy Cut packets was of Thomas taken in 1897

Thank you Claire for that information..
I got the number from National Archives and it must be the same man but he would have been tapping the years in WW1, also I thought that he had left the Navy and was working as a coastguard.. certainly was in 1901.
He had a son Thomas Huntley Wood but I believe that he was a coal miner so not him.
Very strange  unless he got it for his coastguard duties.
He was on HMS Edinburgh in the 1890s

Hi

The Coastguard service was part of the Admiralty during WW1, and had been since 1856, therefore the award of the BWM was not uncommon to serving CG Men.

Thank you Crimea and Claire,
I don't know why I was confused.. it is obviously the same Thomas Huntley Wood as the NA gives his number,  year and place of brith and he would have been only 46 at the outbreak of WW1.
It also had not occured to me that the Coastguard was considered military.
