Abandoned Baby 1950's
« on: Saturday 25 June 11 14:37 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm hoping someone may be able to help me.
Family stories say my maternal aunt now deceased abandoned a baby in a public area in the 1950's
I have a D.O.B and mothers name and area
would there have been any news reports with regards to this?
I believe the child was adopted
I am completely at a loss on where to start

If you have a dob and an area, I would start by checking the local newspapers for a few weeks/months after the birth

Try the local library for newspaper files
Wainwright - Yorkshire
Whitney - Herefordshire
Watson -  Northamptonshire
Trant - Yorkshire
Helps - all
Needham - Derbyshire
Waterhouse - Derbyshire
Northing - all

The newspapers seem to be the logical place to start, if she came forwards then there would almost certainly have been a court case which would have been reported.

Hi, I know of a baby that was abandoned in a public place (telephone box) in the 50's. Do you have anymore more details ie: whether the baby was male or female. Kind regards Jo

Hi Jo
the baby was male
and the family story does not mention a telephone box
although I know that I am only going on gossip on where he was left

Hi, yes this baby was male but was definately left in a phone box. My brothers wife was previously married and he told her that he was abandoned in a phone box. I believe she may still have the newspaper cutting. Do you know which town or area he was left in. I will try and speak to her today to see if she can offer anymore information. Don't get your hopes up thou I would imagine there were several babies being abandoned in thew aftermath of the war years.
If you could let me know anymore information you have that would be helpful. Kind regards Jo
