Hi this a possible, as Bolton is in the Alnwick district:-

1851 Census
John Young 31 occ Quarry Lab b Scotland
Jane 31 b Lane End
Margaret 8 b Field House
Thomas 6 b Lane End
Henry 4 b Lane End
John 2 b Lane End
Residing at Broxfield, Alnwick, Northumberland
Census Ref HO107/2419/796/15

In 1861 Census Ref RG09/3879/41/6 a Margaret Young aged 19 is visiting John/Jane Hood in Alnwick stating born West Bolton.

But of course the birth certificate/marriage certificate for her, will provide at least her father's name!

Had another look at 1861 shown as Farmers daughter, so ignore both results until more proof is found!

I think the visitor/farmers daughter looks/ feels right

Can I purchase the marriage certificate online and download
a digital copy?
(Last time I purchased a cert. it was years ago from the
Northumberland council and delivered via snail-mail ???)

Hi if you are happy that the marriage in Morpeth is the correct one then that would be the best and surest way of following the correct Margaret back. With UK copies you cannot download a digital copy, I use Freebmd ie find the marriage and it's ref and order via them, certain someone can post a link for you to show how easy it is!

Update :-)

From the marriage certificate I have discovered the fathers name as
John Young, Farmer, residing in Choppington, Bedlington Parish.
Margaret married Michael Birkley in the Bedlington Parish Church,
26th October 1863.
The info from the 1861 census showing Margaret as a VISITOR in Alnwick and a Farmers Daughter appears to correspond.
I've been all over the 1851 census, 1861 census and 1871 census looking for John Young and family but have not turned up anything positive.
The birth of Margaret in 1842 has still to be confirmed.

Any advice on where I should turn next?
Which will provide more information, Birth or Death certificate?

Death certificates hardly provide any useful information so a birth would be much better.

Thank-you to all  ;D ;D ;D
What a great site, the people make it so ;D

I actually found Margaret in the 1851 census aged 9, a visitor again, this time with her aunt Isabella (Young) Hood.

Kindest regards

Fred Birkley
