HODGE(S) of Aughton
« on: Sunday 26 June 11 16:30 BST (UK) »
Mr g-g-grandfather was James HODGE (approx 1802-1887), who m Ellen HARROCKS (1807-1857) in 1829. All these events are listed as  in Aughton. My problems are with his parentage:

According to the Aughton 1861 James' father was John, aged 89yrs and b North Meols, LAN. The Aughton 1851 shows John (aged 79yrs) with s Roger, aged 48yrs, possibly James' younger brother?

But the Parish Clerks website for Aughton lists James as s of Roger/Margaret, and bap 1802 then bur 1803, with another s James bap 1806. Are these a different family, a different James? There are so darned many of them (IGI lists b/bap of 44 James in LAN, 120 b/baps of John, and 6 Rogers)!

Although both James and Roger consistently state their birthplace in censuses as Aughton, IGI includes baps for both a 1802 James and a 1803 Roger in Ormskirk. Both entries give father as John -- with mother as Elizabeth. And this leads me to Question Two:

Parish Clerks don't shed any light on the parents' marriage,  but there is a 1793 IGI entry for John with Elizabeth MAWDSLEY in Ormskirk. Unfortunately this show John as  'of Halsall'.

Am I on the right lines here please? Any thoughts welcome!

Lancashire OPC gives the place of residence as Aughton for both of these Ormskirk christenings.
Don't forget that on a marriage the place of residence is possibly only the weeks leading up to the wedding to save having banns read in two parishes

Do you have the 1841 for the family?

Thank you, Rosie.

Although I had found the brothers on IGI as bap in Ormskirk, for some reason my addled brain hadn't found them on lan-opc which ,as you wrote, would have confirmed their abode as Aughton. Doh ....

Yes, I had noticed John & Elizabeth on the 1841, with widower (?) Roger and his children. She shows as older than John, and lan-opc shows an Elizabeth conveniently bap in Halsall during 1761. I suppose John might have been an aglab there.

Thanks again!
