Lastly, I looked for the Hodge and Reid obelisk and I'm almost certain that this is it! Sadly, the inscription is face-down.

Might you have any other Douglas surnames -
Robert Douglas Reid you confirmed but his wife Mary Findlay was not and am wondering if she remarried and might be listed.
Mary Ann Reid and Wm Hodge were confirmed but any evidence of Anne Hodge and Lawrence Jackson and Joanne Reid Hodge and Melville B Craig?
Douglas/Paterson - James and Helen, perhaps buried in Hamilton
Douglas/Rankin - Christiana and Duncan, perhaps buried in Glasgow
Douglas/Douglas - Alexander and Jean, perhaps buried in Glasgow
Somerville/Douglas - Thomas and Christiana and children
Thank you for all your help with this. Your photos of the headstone are most appreciated.

I'll work through them but, without another surname to match up with, I wont find Mary Findlay, sorry.

The Helen Paterson who married James Douglas at Hamilton in 1820 was a sister of my gt-gt-gt-grandfather John Paterson.  Small world. However, I strongly suspect that this James Douglas was the son of Robert Douglas and Mary McAlpine.

Another headstone in the churchyard may link into your Douglas family.

The transcription reads -
"Erected by (...very worn..) in memory of his father James Douglas, farmer at Thornlee in the parish of Cambusnethan who died (..) May 1784 aged (..)". The rest of this stone has sunk below ground.

The plot book (which only begins around 1876) lists 2 entries.
ROBERT DOUGLAS, aged 65 years, interred 24th February 1892.
MARY DOUGLAS, aged 77 years, 2nd February 1903.

I may find more in the Day Book records.

Your 1820 Proclamations of marriage with James Douglas and Helen Paterson is making me question my Douglas lineage. My James Douglas (1803-1857) married to Janet Douglas (1805-1857) show in the 1841 and 1851 Scotland Census - Mary McAlpine/McAlpen (abt.1780-1850s) present with the family. I assumed she would be James mother. However James Douglas and Helen Paterson have children with second names of Alpine suggesting this James Douglas has a relative McAlpine. Mary McAlpine would not have had two James!!!! Unless Helen Paterson had McAlpine relatives. Very confused!

Do you know the names of the parents of your Helen Paterson and James Douglas?
