Oh, bussby, your friend is a very lucky person. James McLean, father of Elizabeth and husband of Ann Ingram died in 1855. This was the first year of Statutory Registration in Scotland and the certificates were very detailed.

This is what it says:

Parish of Rathven 1855

McLean, James, farmer. Aged 44. Born Rothiemay and has lived in Rathven for about 16 years.
Parents were Alexander McLean, farmer and Elizabeth, maiden surname Morrison.
Married to Ann Ingram.
Children's names and ages in birth order - Margaret, 14; William, 12; James, 10; Ann, 8; Eliza, 6; Alexander, 2
Date of death - 28th May 1855 at 11 pm.
Died at Elliscroft from ?sclerhosis of the pyloris (some years).
Buried at Rathven Churchyard.
Informant - Thomas Ingram, father in law.

So we even know Ann's father's name as well as James's.
