Glad that you sorted the schools out Spendlove. It never crossed my mind that there would be another grammar school in Belper - it isn't very big even now :-)

Dear All,

Came across this old thread and thought I would add my bit.

The privately run Belper Collegiate / Grammar was operating at its Chapel Street address at least as far back as 1871. Its Principal in those days was William Bennett Anthony, a schoolmaster from Royston in Cambridgeshire b.1842. We can see him at the school in the 1871, 1881, and 1891 censuses (one of my relatives, Mary Ann Rodgers/Rogers, was a domestic at the school in 1891). William's mother, Susan Anthony, had also been a schoolmistress. Clearly Mr Anthony made a good living, as by 1901 he had retired to Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. 

As well as G W Wright mentioned above, I have also seen the name of George Vale as one of the subsequent Principals.
