William Richard Marks ( born 1879 / 1880 ? )

married Alice King Gregory in April 1913
marriage cert has him as as age 33 gardener residing Cargreen
father stated as William Marks  carpenter (deceased)

Alice was born in Pillaton (i've also worked out who her parents and grandparents were).

thank you for the reply and suggestion.

i searched freebmd using those years and Cornwall

none for a William Richard Marks

one William Marks born 1880 Redruth

two William Marks born 1880 Stratton, is this two people or just one?

Redruth is quite far to the west of Cargreen.
Stratton is a bit to the north from Cargreen.

I suppose Devon might also be an option as the Landulph/st.germans area is right near the border.

On searching the 1881 cenusus i thought this looked promisong, right area but the father is down as Richard

You are right, we have no evidence he was even born in Cornwall, could have been anywhere.

SO maybe 1911 is the place to start, just 2 yrs before his marriage. Hopefully a William Marks age 31ish who is a gardener can be found, hopefully around Cargreen area.
That woud give us a place of birth to work with - and if tracing back found him with a father called William who was carpenter and who died pre 1913, then you will have your man!

The jobs idea was good but it's not working out so easy.
I've tried searching 1901 and 1911 but i'm still none the wiser on which William Marks are the correct ones.

On the bright side i found Alice K Gregory on the 1901 and 1911 census at her uncle William Henry Rowe's house in Cargreen.

I think the Elizabeth married to Richard, with a son William in the 1881 census is possibly the same Elizabeth married to a William Short on the 1891 census.

Another possible from the 1901 census has at Kingsand a William Marks (fisherman age 42) married to Susannah, with a son William Marks (blacksmiths apprentice age 20 born Cawsand) other children John, Florence and Frederick.

Hi

I wonder if this could be William Richard Marks' dad ....

Birth;

Richard William Marks
Jun q 1854
Stratton, Cornwall
Vol 5c P 7

On the 1861 census there is a 7( b 1854) year old Richd Wm Marks b St Gennys living with his parents and siblings. This Richard fits with your 1st 1881 census with Richard married to Elizabeth:

Richard MARKS      Head      M      Male      26      St Gennys, Cornwall, England      Ag Labourer
Elizabeth MARKS      Wife      M      Female      23      Devonport, Devon, England
Thomas MARKS      Son            Male      4      St Germans, Cornwall, England
William MARKS      Son            Male      9 m      St Germans, Cornwall, England
Elizabeth HITCHINGS      Mother In Law      W      Female      60      Saltash, Cornwall, England

In 1891 we have William Marks and 1901 we have William R Marks living with his mother who has remarried and is now Elizabeth A Short. (her new husband is a William!)

Richard William Marks (bc 1855) dies in Jan q 1888  - Plympton St Mary, Devon

I wonder if the above death cert would reveal his occupation?

deb

Travellers = Penfold, Orchard, James
Devon = Middleton,  Waterfield, Adams, Clark/e, Gould
Cornwall = Palmer, Carnarton, Slack/Smith. Morris/h
Wales, New Quay = James, Evans

Richard William Marks (bc 1855) dies in Jan q 1888  - Plympton St Mary, Devon

I wonder if the above death cert would reveal his occupation?

His occupation is stated as Labourer. Informant was his sister Elizabeth.

This appears to be him with his family on the 1861 census..
