I thought that judyjay had death information and was only looking for census information so didn't post.  There is a death for John Ranson in Toronto on Dec 20, 1900 and his age was given as 60.  He was born in England and liivng at 236 Victoria.  Occupation - caretaker.  It was one of the death registrations with no room to add parents names.   Seems like a good possibility.

I thought that Elizabeth's death in 1930 was his wife.  The informant was son-in-law, Alfred Jacobs, and there is a marriage for Nellie Ranson, d/o John Ranson and Elizabeth Griffith on Sept 17, 1913 at Toronto.  Nellie died April 19, 1936 at Toronto and is buried at Aurora.  The informant was her married daughter.

Thank you for all your replies. This is fascinating stuff.  I only found him by accident after putting his mother's name into a search engine and getting the 1871 marriage details. I went back to the English censuses and found him living with an aunt and uncle on one census and his grandparents on the other.
John's parents were John and Dorinda Ranson and he was born in Colchester Essex. His father was from Suffolk.

This just gets better. I've just used my brain andused the new search on FamilySearch and found John [son of John and Elizabeth]and Lily in Chicago in 1930. They emigrated in 1924.  Found other stuff too.

Dorinda b. 1813/1814 Essex & John Ranson were married before 1837, so not registered, nor can she befound on prior censuses. Name also spelled Derinda.
Baptism of Miriam Tabor Ranson from the IGI was performed at Helens Lane Meeting House Or Stockwell Chapel-Indecolches, Colchester, Essex. Wonder which denomination holds their records in case they may have been married there?

Just found this older posting online, says her maiden name was Frost ( you'd need proof of this)

I also found another judyjay request where she thinks the surname is Hall or Hull

The meeting house was already in place 1790...Not your Dorinda though :)
