I now have the death certificate for my uncle Arthur Albert Frear. He died of a heart attack in St. James Hospital, Leeds 1977 and his usual address was given as 53 The Calls, Leeds.

I have seen the building recently in Google and it is now an office block.

Can anybody tell me what it was in the 1970s? I believe my uncle was partially homeless before he died so I suspect that this building was a hostel of some kind around then?

Does anybody recall what it was?

Thank you so much woody 32, you have solved it with that info. That is the one of the last pieces of my jigsaw and I am nearly there now in closing my chapter off with my uncle.

Very interesting find Jotsmee......my uncle had left East Yorkshire and we heard years later he had stayed in a hostel somewhere, we thought it was the Salvation Army but could well have been some other church hostel as you have found.

Much appreciated.....

The Calls address was a church army hostel in the 70s.
My parents were the managers of the Lisbon street hostel in the 70s, so if he had died there it would most likely have been my dad who did the funeral, however, with what the death certificate said he most likely died in the church army hostel.
The building is still there, but is an office block now (waiting to be sold I think) It's on the corner of the street and you can still see the church army wording above the door.
