NSW Electoral Roll for circa 1911?
« on: Friday 01 July 11 00:15 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I'm trying to trace a William MILLS (b abt 1859 in Suffolk, Eng; came to Auckland, NZ on "Claramont" in 1863; emigrated to NSW, Australia by 1911).
William is the informant on his brother's (Claremont Vincent Mills) death certificate of 2 Aug 1911, and is living at 139 Bedford Street, Newtown, NSW.
Unfortunately the Aus electoral rolls on the Ancestry website only go from 1930 for NSW. Does anyone out there have access to hardcopies and would please be able to assist me?
I'd love to find out who he married, whether he had children, what his occupation was and so forth.

Many thanks
Rachel

Hello,
yes I have - that's where I ordered William's brother Claremont's marriage and death certs from. I know that other Aus states have electoral rolls digisted and available on Ancestry's website, but NSW doesn't have earlier than 1930. Seeing as I was given Williams address on Claremont's death cert of 1911, it made sense for me to try and find William on an electoral roll.

There are quite a few William Mills on the NSW marriage and death indexes, and narrowing them down by buying many certificates, would be an expensive exercise  :)

Regards
Rachel

Hi, Could this be your Williams Marriage.

2390/1911 MILLS    WILLIAM J C  To STANFIELD MARTHA E    at NEWTOWN

As you say there are a lot of them but at least this one is at Newtown. Do you have any initials for your William.

William does not appear at that address on the Sands Directories.

There is a CD for the 1913 NSW electoral roll - some libraries may have it.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0e1m/

N.S.W. Electoral Rolls available at the National Library of Australia and probably at NSW State Records and State Library however I haven't checked....leave it to you.  There is no roll for 1911
1903, 1906, 1908-1909, 1913, 1915-1917, 1919, 1921-1922, 1925-1926, 1928, 1930-1941, 1943-1944, 1946-1951, 1953-1955, 1958-1961, 963-1970, 1972-1984, 1986, 1988: Feb 25, 1989, 1990: Feb 26 - current

A couple of possible deaths for your Wm...but as mentioned, his full name would assist you locating him in the death index ie if he died in NSW.

Deaths
11343/1911
MILLS Claremont V
Father James J  Mother Annie
District Newtown

6298/1918
MILLS  William
Father James J
District Granville

2655/1931
MILLS William
Father James  Mother Annie
District Fivedock

I notice there are other MILLS deaths with Father James and Mother Annie so the 1931 may be from another family.

You could obtain the services of a transcription agent giving all the information about William's place of birth etc and requesting partial information from the above certs to hopefully identify your Wm.  Of course he may have died with parents unknown.

Where was Claremont buried?  It should be noted on his death certificate?

Have you searched for a marriage for Wm in NZ?

Cheers

Hi Neil
I did remember seeing that marriage.
My William had a middle name that started with "E" - but I don't know what the middle name was.
He might not have used it on registering, perhaps?
I know about the "E" from this 1861 census:
1861 census: Westgate Street, Ipswich St Matthew, Suffolk, England.
James John Mills, Head, Married, 36, Wine Merchant, Dorsetshire
Anne Mills, Wife, Married, 34, Ireland, Queen's County  (ie. County Laois, Ireland abt 1827)
Mary Ann Sullivan, Daughter in law, Unmarried, 16, Limerick, Ireland
William E. Mills, Son, 2, Suffolk
Horace C. Mills, Son, 4 months, Suffolk
Annie Sophia Mills, Sister, Unmarried, 34, Dorsetshire
Mary Mills, Aunt, Unmarried, 55, Suffolk.

Regards
Rachel

I see that Claremont's parents are listed as James and Annie on his death reg on NSW BDM index.

So I had a look for a William with parents James and Annie and there is a death registered at FiveDock in 1931 for a William Mills,

Then had a look at the Sydney Morning Herald on the Trove site and one of the Funeral Notices for Claremont which looks like William placed in the paper only mentions William nothing about a wife and children,( SMH 3.8.1911).

There are also death and funeral notices for the William Mills who died in 1931 (SMH 30.3.1931) that lists children's names.

Hope this helps

Cass

In reply#4 I mentioned there were no Wm MILLS at the address you mentioned in 1911 and asked you a couple of questions but you don't appear to have noticed my post.

I had found the census info with Wm E but thought it better to wait for further information before going down that path ;)

Australian Electoral Roll
1903 NSW  Division Lang Subdivision Newtown-Kingston
MILLS William Edward  74 Regent Street, Newtown   Coach builder
MILLS Emily  74 Regent Street, Newtown  Domestic duties

Perhaps the following is Wm E at Newton

Sands Directories
1892
MILLS Wm E  Camden Street, Newtown

1899
MILLS Wm E  7 Angel Street, Newtown

1910, 1911
MILLS Wm E  3 Newman Street, Newtown

1912. 1913
MILLS Wm E 3 Newman Street, Newtown
MILLS Wm E 13 Brown Street, Newtown

1914, 1915, 1916, 1917, 1918
MILLS Wm E 14 Mary Street, Newtown
MILLS Wm E 13 Brown Street, Newtown

1919, 1920, 1921, 1922, 1923
MILLS Wm E 14 Mary Street, Newtown

1926
MILLS Wm E  Cyrus Ave  Wahroonga

1927, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1932, 1933
MILLS Wm E Snr 145 Addison Road, Marrickville
MILLS Wm E  Cyrus Ave  Wahroonga

Australian Electoral Roll
1930 NSW  Lang/Newington
MILLS Emily 145 Addison Road, Marrickville  Home duties
MILLS William Edward  145 Addison Road, Marrickville   Carriage Builder

1933 Emily is no longer at 145 Addison Road, Marrickville, however their son Robert Joseph* and wife Sylvia Madelaine are still at 139 Addison Road.  Robert died in 1934.

Marriage
5608/1890
MILLS William E
NEWELL Emily

Births to William E and Emily at Newtown - there are possibly others with the 'E' in William's name omitted.
25237/1891 MILLS William G*
25918/1893 MILLS Robert J*
25164/1895 MILLS Alice L M
33173/1899 MILLS Mabel E

The William MILLS who died in 1931 was 70 years of age so born c1861.
Death notice - as mentioned by Cass
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0e25/

Funeral notice
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0e26/

All of the above is research is speculative however the marriage cert for Wm E and Emily should list their ages, places of birth and names of their parents.  Info on reply# how to purchase a transcription.  I do hope it is your William E  ;D

Cheers ;D
