Where do I find Greenwich Hospital Records?
« on: Saturday 02 July 11 20:55 BST (UK) »
Hi

Have family who allegedly enlisted into the Royal Navy from Greenwich Hospital, This was the boarding school for sons of serving sailors at the time.

Can somebody point me in the direction of any links I can go on, to access the census records,  :)

Also, how do I get the Royal Navy ship census records? were they only noted if they were actually in British waters at the time, or did they get included where ever they were across the globe?

Am trying to find any White's that may or may not belong to my tree.

All help gratefully appreciated

Carolyn  :)

Census records are not specific to an institution - you will have to search alphabetically for your ancestors

Same answer as above.  Royal Navy personnel were included in census records irrespective of where they were serving at the time.

Members of the Merchant Navy and other seafarers were only recorded if docked in a British port on census night

What dates  are you concentrating on?

The National Archive at Kew has probably got something,  try TNA   web site.

Am looking at 1881 / 1891 census dates at the moment.

Thanks for reminding me of the National Archive web site, will give it a try.

Thanks for your advice and replying

Hi

The Greenwich Royal Hospital School (established in 1694) was for the children of naval seamen who were orphaned or impoverished. The school moved to Holbrook in Suffolk in 1933.

The records are held at The National Archives in (Admiralty series) ADM 72, ADM 73, ADM 161, ADM 163 and ADM 164

On the 1881 census the school was at reference RG11 727 and in 1891 RG12 515

It's on the Wayback Machine. At a very brief glance I couldn't see any lists of names.
Researching Penge, Anerley, (including the Crystal Palace) and neighbouring parts of Beckenham, currently in London (Bromley), formerly Surrey and/or Kent.
