Looking for Benjamin Roberts
« on: Sunday 03 July 11 18:10 BST (UK) »
Hello, although I've been researching my family tree for some time, this is the first time I've tried to find a family member on a passenger list.  Please can anyone advise me on how to go about it.  The only info I have is the name i.e., Benjamin Roberts b. 1864.   He was born in Ruabon,  North Wales, UK and I have been told he possibly emigrated to Australia but I don't know when exactly although he is on the 1881 census for the UK but not on the 1891 census so assume it could have been between these years.  I have also been told that he may have left Australia and gone to the USA some time later.  Any advice on how to go about looking for him would be appreciated.
Thanks v much.
 :)

Hello Aussiekev,

There is a Queensland Passenger list that shows a Benjamin Roberts born about 1863 and aged 20 years. departing London to Brisbane, arriving 31 October 1883 on the Jerusalem. Unfortunately no other details.

The only one that fits the description in 1881 is at  8 Church Street, Ruabon  RG11/5514/117/21

Parents are Owen Roberts, (b.c. 1835, Anglesey) and Ann (b.c. 1828, Ruabon)

A marriage at St Mary's, Ruabon  1859 between an Owen Roberts and, possibly, an Ann Mears  (North Wales BMD)

I'll check my Ruabon records for an Ann Mears if you'd like this info.

The 1861 Census for Owen and Ann Roberts shows that it was Ann's second marriage to Owen Roberts.
RG9/4282/59/45.

The most likely one is to a William Mears at Ruabon St Mary in 1850.She is very likely to be an Ann Jones.

Not another Jones :(  ::)

Mears seemed to be a nice change.  There seems to have been only one family of Mears so will have a look around for William.

Yep - there is a baptism for a William Mears on 18 March 1827 with the same parents - Richard and Elizabeth of Acrefair.  My marriage records stop at 1837, so have to rely on BMDS after that.

Have you got the marriage reference to William Mears and Ann, William?
