Edward SMITH
« on: Monday 04 July 11 16:10 BST (UK) »
Looking for a bit of guidance with Edward Smith, born appx 1849, shown as Paulton, Somerset in the later census's, moved to yorkshire at some point and married a Mary Beaumont in Leeds, 1870. the only background I have on Edward seems to show being born in Bristol, dist. of St. Pauls, father William. I know there a lot of smiths out there, but am I on the right trail? help please.

Hi,

I noticed that entry-but on marriage record father William's occupation is given as "Joiner"??

Is it 1871 census where Edward states born Bristol??? I can't seem to find him in 1871???

This is where things may have gone astray...1871 census shows Edward and his wife Mary living with his in-laws Samuel and Elizabeth Beaumont at Low Road, Hunslet, Leeds...birthplace Paulton, Somerset, but looking back for 1851 and 1841 to get some background on his family, can only find the entry you mention....living at Tucker St. , and born Bristol. Am I on the right track or is this a Smith too far??

i think its odd if he decided before marriage he was from bristol - but then stranger things have happened

I just remembered I came across a Wiliam Smith who was a shipwright living in Paulton - I'll just go and have a look

I found William Smith with some family age 72 formerly shipwright living in Paulton Somerset in 1851
He may be related to Edward-not sure

but

have found this -and am wondering if Edward started out in life as Edwin???

Birth reg freeBMD
Edwin Smith
Sept qtr 1849
Clutton
11 90

then there is

1851
New Town Paulton Somerset
William Smith head M 41 ? Carpenter Farrington Gurny Somerset
Sarah wife 42 Chewton Mendip somerset
Thomas son 19 coal miner Chewton Mendip
Daniel son 15 coal miner Chewton Mendip
henry son 13 Paulton Somerset
Aron son 4? Paulton
EDWIN son 2 Paulton Somerset
HO107 1939 121 24

1861
New Town
Paulton Somerset
William Smith head M 62 Carpenter Farrington Somerset
Sarah wife 53 Chewton Som
Henry son 21 ag lab Chewton Som
Aaron son 14 -or 16? coal miner Paulton Som
EDWARD son 11 Paulton Somerset
RG9 1679 141 10

both census images are difficult to read in parts - wife could be Sarah or Leah??on both census

Ed is clearly Edwin in 1851 -and clearly Edward in 1861-although on 1861 he is transcribed as "Emma" "son age 11"!!!!

I cannot find an Edwin Smith of correct age b Paulton Somerset in later census -only Edward!!!!!

What do you think???

I really think "Edwin" is your "Edward" -and it seems his brother Aaron married Mary beaumonts sister?

Aaron was b Paulton and moved to Yorks and was a coal miner - they probably both  moved to work at a colliery in Yorks-and then married 2 sisters???

marriage
St Mary Hunslet Yks
after banns
24 Dec 1870
Edward Smith 21 bachelor Miner Thwaite gate father William Smith occ Joiner
Mary beaumont 23 spinster Atkinson Yard father Samuel beaumont Occ labourer
witnesses Samuel beaumont & Martha Beaumont
Edward, mary and witnesses all "made their mark"

Marriage
All Saints leeds Yorks
25 may 1874
Aaron Smith 25 bachelor occ Sinker address Jackson Furnace? (or Terrace) Pit  father William Smith Occ carpenter
Martha Beaumont 21 spinster occ Mill hand address  jackson Furnace (terrace Pit) father Samuel Beaumont occ Labourer
Witnesses George Carter & Annie Beaumont
George carter signed, Aaron, Martha and Annie "made their mark"

it seems pretty convincing Edward is Edwin --do you think????

Thanks for that, I think I got a little confused. I found the Edward Smith and then backtracked him to the one living in Tucker St. Bristol.... oddly enough same father's name, William and even more oddly, the guy in Bristol was an Edwin in one census and became an Edward in the next. However I think this was a mistake, because the info you have for 1851 and 1861 showing born Paulton, with family born thereabouts in Chewton and farrington Gurny looks much better. I think the part about moving to Yorkshire with his brother and both marrying two sisters makes it even more certain. Do you by any chance have anything on the marriage of Edward's parents, there was a mention of a William being 72 in 1851, could this have been Edward's G/father?, and one last thing, can you tell me which parish Paulton, Chewton and Farrington are in please?  Thanks a lot

There is the possiblity of William age 72 in 1851 being Edward's grandfather - he has a son Edwin too

Will see if I can find evidence
