Looking for Job HAWKER
« on: Tuesday 05 July 11 09:16 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for Job Hawker.

He was born in 1826 in Bishop's Cleeve, Gloucestershire, England to parents George and Ann (nee Harper).  He was resident in Bishop's Cleeve at the time of the 1841 census.

His brother Solomon and his family, and his sisters Lydia and Esther all emigrated to Victoria, AUS on board the Appleton in 1857.  They initially settled around Ballarat, before Solomon eventually went to Nathalia, Esther died and Lydia ended up in NSW.

EDIT: I'm confusing my Esthers  :( Job did have a sister Esther, but the one who travelled to Australia on board the Appleton was his infant niece, Solomon's daughter.

Can anyone with the resources please see if you can find if and when he came to Australia?  I haven't been able to find him in England after 1841.

I'd love to know more of him,

Regards,
Alison  :)

You probably have this already.

PROV has a digitised will for a Solomon F HAWKER, farmer,  of Boweya North, Victoria, died Jan 1908.  He leaves all his property to Thomas Henty LEACH, his son-in-law.  The will was dated 1901.  the probate papers state that he had sold the farm and then lived with his son-in-law; later he went back to Nathalia where he died.

I can't see anything for Job either after 1841.  I wonder if he used a different  first name?

Thanks Alison and Judith,

Job certainly is elusive.  I'm wondering myself if he went by another name.  I did find a reference to a Job Hawker in paperspast NZ in 1868 (or thereabouts) in a story about a Jack of all Trades in a boxing match (I think) in America of all places.  Unfortunately there was no information other than a name and the date, so I'm no further along.

He may remain one of my mysteries.

I have all the other information
Regards,
Alison
