I think might have found John in the 1881 census of England,

John DAVIS    Head    Unm    20    Harness Maker    Wales St Asaph

Although the spelling is incorrect that often happens and all the other details fit especially the occupation.

John Davies was born 22 April 1861 at Ty Fry Gemming Street Gwernglefryd St Asaph, his mother was called Emma and she was unmarried. 

In 1871 he lived with his grandmother Mary at Talar St Asaph.
 
I cannot find him between that census and the census in 1901 when he was now a widower

Very difficult to find John on 1891 census 
his occupation on the  censuses 1881-1911 seem to be consistent Saddler/Harness Maker

There is a John DAVIES married living in Chertsey Surrey but he's born Shropshire & his occupation also different

I also can't find him anywhere in 1891 

The 1891 family found by Ladyhawk are in Stapleton, Shropshire (town; Netly) in 1901 with more children.  RG13/2532  f.49  p.6
