"Winter's Building", Mount Pleasant, Whitehaven (Completed)
« on: Wednesday 06 July 11 21:15 BST (UK) »
Possibly someone can pinpoint the location of a building at Mount Pleasant, Whitehaven that seems to be known as "Winter's Building", please?

The 1901 census seems to list it more or less immediately before Ribton Lane, which a number of researchers using this forum have asked about.

Thanks in advance for anyone who may be able to help.

Hi Jos :)

I can't find it, but you may like to look at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=297052,517990 and select the 1866 1:500 Town Plan to have a close look at the area.

Who was living in Winter's Building in 1901?
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Checked historicaldirectories.org for any reference and from 1827 to 1910 - zilch. Could we be misreading? I tried vintners and vinters but still nothing. bob

Who was living in Winter's Building in 1901?

Hello Geoff E,

Thanks for the input.

The family I was looking up on the 1901 census (if I have read the handwriting correctly, and written it down correctly!) was:

Head: James McCashen, aged 26, Coal Hewer, 5 Winter's Building, Mount Pleasant, Whitehaven;
Wife: Elizabeth McCashen, aged 22;
Daughter: Annie McCashen, aged 8 months. (Annie was the eldest child)

[Census Ref: RG 13/4893, Folio 44, Page 33].

Does this make more sense? The Ribton Lane listings seemed to be just after this address.

Personally, I would class Mount Pleasant as (obviously) either side of the famous Mount Pleasant steps, and the area immediately above there, overlooking Whitehaven harbour. Maybe someone else can fathom out the place where the McCashens lived in 1901? I could not visualise where it was from the written description.

The original image shows the address as

No 3 Winters Buil Ginns

followed by nos 4  & 5 then houses in Rippon Lane Ginns, and Meadow View

Adresses the other side of Winters Buil include Top Coach Road Ginns

Ginns & Meadow View still exist on google maps and there is a Coach Road nearby

If you follow Geoff-E's link to old maps and select

1900  1:10,560 Cumberland

the area you want is just to the right of Arrowthwaite Clay pit.

I can't see Winters Buil(dings) marked, but you should get a rough idea of where it was  :)

In 1911 ...

1-5 Winter's Buildings appear between 74 and 75 Ginns.
