ARCHER of Sedlescombe
« on: Thursday 07 July 11 10:33 BST (UK) »
Morning - I am seeking info on the Archer family who I have traced to Sedlescomb.

I am looking for details on John Archer b.1796? who married a Sarah from Crowhurst.

Does anyone have these in their tree or know details regarding the date of their marriage, children and parents, etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

The Archer surname in Sedlescomb (St John Baptist) burials has John buried 28 Nov 1855 aged
66 and Sarah buried 6 April 1871 aged 76.

The burial register covers the years 1559 - 1900 (a few gaps) and the name Archer appears
only 8 times (inc John/Sarah) between 1855-1886, which suggests the Archer's were not
native to Sedlescomb'

15 other parishes within a 5 mile radius of Sedlescombe show a further 18 Archer from as
early as 1627 to 1981 these parishes are as below:

Thank you for responding 'saddles' with that information.  I now know I must look away from the village but the ones you mention would be considered walking distance of each other.

I have John and Sarah's three children, Sarah, Henry and Thomas who was listed as bootmaker in Sedlescomb village, I wonder if his father did that trade aswell!!

I have found in the village of Farnhurst a baptism of John Archer on 04 Feb 1798 (William & Mary) but cannot find the village on Google.  Do you know if that is local to Sedlescomb?  I cannot find a marriage of John to Sarah although in a census she is stated as from Crowhurst (a village in your list).

Are church records accessible in that area - I am afraid I am not local nor do I know the area that well.

All without the benefit of family allowance!!  He would certainly have had to make lots of shoes!!

Just received my copy of WDYTYA magazine and in it was the suggestion of googling the name and village, etc.  and two websites have come up.  However they do not go back any further on John Archer but trawling IGI I have found a John a base child of Grace Archer of Hythe, she then married a William Bock a widower a couple of years later.  As the 'crow flies' it is not too far for someone to have travelled.  Don't know if it is correct, just pencilled it in for now.

Thank you for your continued interest.

Did`nt they have a hard life.Television was a good Invention ;D

I have been surprised how far Ancestors moved.OH has one lot who moved from Buckinghamshire to Hastings,Sussex. People seemed to move around for  work etc like  they do today.

Seems a good idea to keep John pencilled in.

Pleased i could help.
