I have had information sent to me regarding John Batchelor and Mary.
Their X2 children ?? Mary Batchelor 1806 and Sarah Batchelor 1809 both baptised in Upchurch.
There is a possibility that the parents John Batchelor and Mary ?? were not married. I have a copy of baptism records Upchurch ( Kent Family History) Looking at records of other baptisms the name of the childs father is followed by name of mother. eg John and Mary. The record of children Mary & Sarah Batchelor the parents are recorded as MARY and John.  This I think suggests children were illigitimate. All children baptised who were born out of wedlock only mothers name is present.

Not necessarily, Victoria.
I have done a good deal of research into Parish Records and, while the format is largely down to the cleric that recorded it, an illegitimate child was normally shown with just the Mother's name and 'Illegitimate' beside it or earlier on 'Born out of Wedlock.'
Occasionally both parents were shown i.e. John SMITH & Mary BROWN which made it very confusing as it wasn't clear which name the child took. The fact that the mother's name appears first is not particularly significant.
