1911 - is this the York Workhouse?
« on: Sunday 10 July 11 08:32 BST (UK) »
On the 1911 Census my ancestor Ralph Daggett is an "inmate" with lots more inmates somewhere in York but I can`t see the full address on the page.  (I`ve only got pay-to-view credits for Findmypast so can`t look at other pages to check). I know he wasn`t well off so it seems likely this was the Workhouse but I would like to know for sure.

On the entry he is actually listed as Ralph Daggill - he was born in 1838 in Sheriff Hutton, Yorks & his occupation was `painter` (house, not paintings!)

Many thanks              Jane

Hi Jane,

Yes, it's York Union Workhouse, Huntington Road, York.

I think the building is stilll there.

On my screen, just below the address bar  there is a "Google"   search  box.  Just enter that postcode  and you will get  a map   of York,  then you can search the length of   that road Huntington Road.

familysearch.org has the record for Ralph Daggett.......do you already have this info?

Baptism/Christening Date: 19 Mar 1838
Baptism/Christening Place: Sheriff Hutton, York
Father's Name: John Daggett
Mother's Name: Ann
1841 census - Sheriff Hutton
1861 census - Micklegate, York
1881 census - 48 Tanner Row, York as a lodger, occupation house painter

This could well be his parents John and Ann.....
