ps.  A quick look at other children of Richard JOHNSON & Mary BARBER bought up this link with Wrentham.

Richard JOHNSON bpt 31 Jan 1791 Wrentham
Also a Robert JOHNSON 12 Jan 1808 South Cove, Mary Ann JOHNSON 24 Jul 1803 South Cove, plus William at Covehithe.

BUT then a search for children of Benjamin JOHNSON & Elizabeth bought up this:
Joseph JOHNSON bpt 28 Aug 1789 Wrentham
Benjamin JOHNSON bpt 13 Jul 1788 Wrentham
plus more at Frostenden inc William.

How you find out if which or either are parents of your William is another matter.

Good luck
Keziah

Thanks Keziah!!

I have studied your info and the map and agree that it does seem unlikely that he came from Lincolnshire.  Why does there have to be 2 Williams born at the same time and in the same area?  It is so frustrating!

Do marriage records from that time give the occupation of the groom or the father?  I only wonder as there are several painters and chimney sweeps in the family.  I think I am clutching at straws now!!

If anyone has any thoughts, I would be really grateful.

Thanks
Lynne

Hi Lynne

Think then clutching at brushes might be nearer the mark :)

Sorry to tell you the only thing you are likely to get from marriage records of that time are witnesses names.

I wonder if there would be any info in newspapers - perhaps when William died in 1880??  As a Chimney sweep he would have been well known locally.  Suffolk County Library would be a possible source for those.

Nice one ;D

I have checked the burial information you gave and Philip, Maria and William all fit.  I am trying to work out the connection with Charles (32) and William (55) as these ages don't fit in with my information so far.  Interesting that they are also Chediston Street.

Do you know Halesworth?  Just wondered if it is a big place and if Chediston Street is still there.

I will post under "Look ups" for the marriage as no-one has responded here.

Thanks for your help so far

Lynne, just put Chediston Street, Halesworth into a Google search and you will see that it is indeed still there.

Halesworth is a very pleasant market town, as you will see when you Google  :D

Hello Lynne

A quick look at the 1851C  gives William Johnson c1821 & wife Elizabeth (nee Denny) living in Chediston St, Halesworth with their son Charles born c1847.  They are living with Elizabeth's mother.  William gives his place of birth as Harleston (Norfolk), which is not that far from Halesworth.

In 1841 William c1821 is unmarried but living with the Denny family in Chediston St.

So it looks like William & Charles are father & son.  Could William c1821be the son of William c1796??

Thanks, I have found William (1821) on the 1841-1871 census, and we know he died 1875.  Elizabeth is on the 1881 as Widow but not 1891.  Do you have a possible burial for her?

I think you are correct that William & Charles are father and son.  Also, there is a Harriet with them on the 1871 census, born 1853, but not on the 1881, so I think they are the 3 burials you listed earlier.

I will now try to trace the parents of William (1821).

On the 1871 with William & Elizabeth is also a baby Charles (grandson), so I need to find out who he belongs to.  Harriet was a spinster when she died in 1879, but she could have been his mother.

Hi Lynne

Had a quick look at the Suffolk Burial Index for you - 2 possible Elizabeth Johnson's between 1881 -1891 but neither living in Halesworth or quite the right age but either could be a possibility.

Elizabeth JOHNSON of Bungay buried 6 Dec 1884 (78) Shipmeadow, St Barts.

Elizabeth JOHNSON of Ringsfield buried 11 Oct 1888 (78) Ringsfield.

Both places are within a few miles of Halesworth.

Also found a possible bpt for William Johnson 1821 on familysearch

William JOHNSON 25 Jun 1820 son of Henry JOHNSON & Mary BARBER, Redenhall with Harleston & Wortwell, Norfolk.

I think you have your work cut out - there are Johnsons everywhere ;D

Keziah - I hate to admit defeat, but I think you are right.   I will try to work out where (and if) the Johnson/Denny family connect to what I already know.

Pat - thanks, I have found the Halesworth website and suggested to my husband that we make a trip sometime and try to visualise chimney sweeps and painters in Chediston Street!!
