Wincle
« on: Monday 11 July 11 10:59 BST (UK) »
I know this might sound like a really silly question, but how is Wincle pronounced?

Is it Winkull or Winsull?

Hopefully someone can put us out of our misery.

Many thanks.

Nickie

I've always heard it with a hard c - like the shellfish. (Not  a silly question with the eccentricities of English pronunciation)

Thank you both very much for helping me.  It's much appreciated.

It's been a bit of a niggle, just like trying to pronounce Wildboarclough, but I know how to say that one.

Nickie - you're welcome. I'm lucky in that my parents grew up in the same general area as their ancestors so I'm familiar with the names of most places I turn up on my tree; though I did have to ask about one recently that was new to me. I've ancestors in Wincle churchyard (not Browns, though). In case you haven't seen them there's some photos of Wincle church as well as the war memorials there and at Wildboarclough on the Carl's Cam site:
