Railway records 1891 Middlesborough
« on: Sunday 01 May 05 13:15 BST (UK) »
Hi All
Where would I be able to find railway personnel records for a Wagon Truck Inspector in 1891 in Middlesborough? My ancestor was called William Pratt and died 1893 in Middlesborough, he lived in Railway Terrace so am assuming somewhere his place of work.
Thanks
John Rowley

Have you been in touch with Cleveland Archives Office in Middlesbrough?   They are very helpful.   I tried but failed to find William Pratt in 1891 to see whereabouts Railway Terrace was - I have some ancient maps of Middlesbrough so will look later.    How old was he?     There were a lot of dock and industrial railways as well as the passenger service so he might have been involved with those.

Hi Sillgen

My William Pratt was born 1845 in Sandhutton, Thirsk.  He died 1893 and his occupation was railway truck inspector.  They were living in 1891 at 12 Railway Terrace Middlesborough.

Thanks a lot

First of all he is in North Ormesby in 1891 - a suburb of Middlebrough not in the town.   If you check on Genuki it will tell you about it.   My maps are a bit useless for that!  If you put it into Google lots more sites come up.  The next Road is Cargo Fleet Road.   My ancestor drowned in the dry dock at Cargo Fleet "whilst in a fit"!!     Cargo Fleet is where the combined Marton and Ormesby becks joined the Tees.
It does sound more and more like docks railway stuff but if you look on a road atlas there is a railway line near to Ormesby too.

Railway Terrace was right on the main line out of Middlesbrough to Guisborough and Whitby. I would of said it was in Middlesbbrough as it is on our side of Ormesby beck which was the boundary in 1880's.
Today the area is under the new road that  runs along the side of the railway.
I have added a picture that shows Railway Terrace ( part of ) and the salt wells that where in that area ( this area is called Saltwells now ! ) the picture is taken looking in the direction of Middlesbrough.
Spenceley , anywhere
