Is there an X with two dots next to one of the Regiments?
This will be the one he first served overseas with

Also any letters next to his date of entry such as 2b?

It's a cross and four dots, but I presume you are correct, Ady. Apologies for potentially misleading you Maryan!

I have attached the medal card in case there is something else I have not yet spotted.

Regards,

Matt.

I would pretty much be certain he was with the 6th Batt LNL at Gallipoli
Dates are pretty close on his Medal Index Card.
Difficult to pin his death down youd have to check BMDs and see what they throw up

The X with dots represents first unit overseas and whats stamped on medal rims. :)

6th (Service) Battalion
Formed at Preston in August 1914 as part of K1 and attached to 38th Brigade in 13th (Western) Division. Moved initially to Tidworth and then Blackdown in February 1915.
17 June 1915 : sailed from Avonmouth, going to Gallipoli via Mudros. Landed at Anzac Cove, 4 August.
January 1916: Evacuated from Gallipoli to Egypt and thence to Mesopotamia.

BMDs doesn't give me anything concrete, i've even toyed with the thought he cleared off to the USA after the war.

Any idea which battalion he was in whilst serving the Royal Scots?

Gary
1st GARRISON BATTALION -ROYAL SCOTS not to be confused with 1st Battalion RS.

This evidence is based on 2 x casualties who died in Egypt in 1918

1st Garrison Batt was employed as POW Guards in Egypt,Salonika and Cyprus and guarded Turkish POWS

No not Frank
Both are buried in Egypt so youd  have to check cwgc for their cemetery
one is Arthur Bruce 45016 RS
other is Samuel Cochrane 45076 RS
Both died back end of 18 probably of illness/disease

Only thing I can think of is that your man changed name and wanted to disappear after the war..im sure plenty took that oppertunity

There were medals awarded and many were Russian medals:  See a book now out of copright but on Amazon and others titled:

"Bolos and Barishynas: Being an account of the Sadlier-Jackson Brigade and Altham Flotilla on the North Dvina during the summer of 1919

My grandfather fought with the 46th Royal Fusiliers and Green's Horse, and his brother serving in the 45th in the same battle won a Military Medal.

So don't believe it when someone says there were no awards made.  Also the book referenced above gives a list of the various regiments/battalions and those who served, and also those who died.
