Outward bound for India
« on: Saturday 16 July 11 14:44 BST (UK) »
My ancester Thomas Quinn was killed in Burma 1945. I have
recently received his service records and I note that he embarked in
the UK on 14th Jan 1943, attatched to 20th Bat. of Royal Fusileers. He
disembarked in India on 19th March 1943. Is it possible to ascertain
which ship / vessel he was transported on?
Also, prior to this he was granted leave with "SLRA", can anyone tell me
what this means.
All help gratefully received.

Have a look at this page   www.convoyweb.org.uk/port/index.html?home.php~armain

Suggest that you look at  Arrivals at Bombay  on or about the date you mention.

Thankyou ScouseBoy,
Ship Dominion Monarch seems to be standing out, and I
notice that she sailed from Liverpool on 20th Jan 1943.
I will look into this in more detail.
Regards

Yes.    That convoyweb  web site has most of them.   You   need to know the route travelled  or port of departure  and destination port.   there were code letters  which denote  particular routes   or Whether it was a   "Fast"   convoy or a "slow"   convoy.    Troop ships tended to be "Fast"     and   some of the big troop ships tended not to travel in convoy.         What is your particular  question, or ship you are following?

I do not think that degree of detail is possible to look up in the on-line records.

I only know  of the name of the ship that my dad travelled on from Halifax, Nova Scotia  to Bombay,  via Capetown  because he had photos of the ship in his photograph album.
