I wonder if he was one of the earlier Timber Merchants-and made his money that way?

He seems to have had a finger in all sorts of pies.   :)

Looks like earlier he was engaged in road building, then later at Whatawhata, in the sawmilling business  ... and later again became a farmer ?

His Will should be all-revealing.   :)

You could try posting a look-up request on here for someone going to Archives NZ in Auckland, to view the probate file.

It would be interesting to see what it says in the book by John T. Diamond.

Hi Woody

No guarantees, but you may be able to get a look-up of the book via the Palmerston North Library  (- it's a long way from Auckland, but this library holds a copy and and also offers volunteer help.)

This is what you need to quote in your request :

Title:   "Once the Wilderness" / by John T. DIAMOND

Call No:      993.23
[Location:  Central Library - NZ General Section ]

Look up for :
FOXALL - Seacombe (Waitakere Valley) - page #  48

------------------------------------------------------------------

Link to Library >>

EDIT :   oops ... just need to re-check this - see next post.

WOW !   Great news, Kiwi-Terrier.   ;)

[And rare to find a death cert. filed with a New Zealand probate record. ]

So Woody's mystery is solved.   :)

This is the 2nd oldest death certificate that I have come across with a probate.
Have been lucky when opening probates to find death certificates, birth certificates and of course in Divorce files wedding certificates and birth certificates. One day I struck three death certificates .

... slightly off-topic.   ;)

That's most interesting K-T.   Of all the many probates I've viewed, from all over NZ, I think I've only ever found two or three d/certs. annexed to the records.  (Un-lucky me.   :D )
Wonder if this was something that became "the norm" in later years ?
