Hi

Wonder if anyone can help me?  I'm looking for information on my husbands great grandfather Albert Skeet.  We believe he came from Norwich but don't know his year of birth.  He was in the royal garrison artillery and stationed in Londonderry Northern Ireland where he married Eliza Anne Stewart in1906.  In the 1911 census for Londonderry they are living in Ebrington barracks Londonderry and her age is given as 28 although no age is given for him but expect he may be a bit older so maybe born during the 1870's.  The reason we know so little and are so interested is that Albert was already married in 1906 and was later removed from service having committed bigamy.  We expect his previous marriage took place in England and would be interested in any information about his life prior to coming to londonderry.

any info would be great.

Hi!

My Skeets come from Tuddenham & Ipswich.  I don't have an Albert Skeet, but I do have a James Albert (1868 - 1959), who was born in Aldershot, Hants, but whose parents came from Suffolk.  If you can go back a generation (try census records/FreeBMD) I might be able to give you more info.

.................

I've just found an email my cousin sent a while back which might be relevant - I copy it below with my reply which includes a load of census details.   I'm not sure if this is the same Albert Skeet, but if he is, here's a fair amount of info for you.  Good luck.  Joan

"I have just been round to visit some neighbours called Skeet.  I was
always curious about their name, but this evening I have learned more
and I was wondering whether you still had the Skeet family tree
information which your mother showed me years ago.

It turns out that this family originated in Ipswich (perhaps nothing to
be proud of this week).  This caught my attention because I think
Reavell was an important name in your mother's family, and Reavell is,
or has been, a big name in Ipswich, so I'm guessing that "our" Skeets
may have had a connection with the town.  So ... you might be interested
in checking for an Albert Skeet, who left Ipswich around 1900 to become
a police officer in the City of London.  He was my neighbour's great
grandfather and must have been of the same generation as your mother, my
grandmother and Alec, who were I think born in St Alban's.  Apparently
most of Albert's family records are from St Peter's Church in Ipswich -
I don't know whether you have any church-specific information.

My reply:

I found Albert Skeet in the 1901 census for Newington, London

106 Lion St, Newington, St Matthew

Albert Skeet, Head, married, 25, police constable (city) b Ipswich, suffolk
Violet Skeet, wife, 26, b Ipswich, Suffolk

in 1881 the family is at Little Wolsey St, Ipswich

Henry Skeet, Head, mar, 30 Coal Porter, b Freston, Suffolk   (just S Ipswich)
Susannah Skeet, wife, 33,  b Ipswich, Suffolk
Susannah Skeet, dau, 11, Scholar,  b Ipswich, Suffolk
Henry James Skeet, son, 9, Scholar,  b Ipswich, Suffolk
Albert Skeet, son, 7, Scholar,  b Ipswich, Suffolk
William C. Skeet, son, 4, Scholar, b Ipswich, Suffolk
Mary A. Skeet, dau, 2,  b Ipswich, Suffolk

In 1871, they are at 17 Cardinal St, Ipswich
Henry Skeet, Head, mar, 20, Coal Porter, b Ipswich, Suffolk
Susannah Skeet, wife, 22, b Ipswich, Suffolk
Susannah Skeet, dau, 1, b Ipswich, Suffolk

There seems to be a lodger too, Sophia Coleman, widowed, 75, b Norwich, Norfolk

I can't locate Henry in 1861, but I think I can in 1851

Census for Freston, Suffolk

James Skeet, Head, 27 Agricultural labourer, b Wherstead, Suffolk (just S Ipswich)
Sarah Skeet, wife, 26, b Cobdock Suffolk (where do they find these names!!) (Just SW Ipswich)
William Skeet, 3, at home, b Freston, Suffolk
Frederick Skeet, at home, b Freston, Suffolk
Henry J Skeet, 2 months, at home, b Freston, Suffolk

James Skeet married Sarah Hearn at Copdock, Suffolk, 15th Nov 1845 - which looks a pretty good match for date & place. (IGI)

None of this links up with 'our' Skeets, whom I've traced back to Rushmere St Andrew & Culpho - which are NorthWest of Ipswich - ie not that far apart, but the other side of town.

Hello!
I am also trying to find my Skeet family. It seems nobody could spell or transcribe this name, and so far I have found them down as Street, Skeal and Skelt! For ages I just thought they didn't exist, or had moved from somewhere I couldn't find. Anyway, I just wanted to say (in case you haven't) - look for these really weird spellings & others you can think of!!
I don't think there is an Albert in our lot. The men we have (in the 1881) are: James (the grandfather); Charles (1847) (the father); James (1868), Arthur (1871), Herbert (1877), Frederick (1880). Since the Census came straight after this, there is a chance that there was a later Albert, but I don't know. These Skeets were living in Wells Next the Sea, which is up in north Norfolk on the coast.
Good luck with your searches! Maybe we will find we have a distant connection! It's not a very common name.

Hi!

I've tracked your Skeet's back to 1851 via census records.  James & Mary Ann had a huge family!
In 1851, they are listed under 'Skeel' other years under 'Skeet'  In 1851 there were also a Robert Skeet (Skeel) b c 1786 in Walsingham & Martha Skeet b c 1784 Walham Waytts, Norfolk, England.  These could well be the parents as James & Mary Ann had eldest son 'Robert R Skeet'.

Not an Albert in sight for Kaz, but might help with your research.

Good luck!

Joan

Hello Joan, I guess that last message was for me. How exciting, and unexpected! And how kind of you to look them up (Skeel, huh!). i should be able to locate them using Skeel, I guess. By the way, do you have any Skeets in your family?
All the best, and thanks again!

I've been through the census returns - here they are. I advise you to check IGI events with the original records. FreeBMD are pretty reliable and you can check their original images.

Good luck!

Joan

Bonus.  Familysearch.org have a wonderful collection of Norfolk parish registers (would they had other counties too, but they only have Norfolk & Cheshire!)

According to FreeBMD, James Skeet married Mary Ann Cooper Dec q 1837 at Walsingham, Norfolk

James Skeet was baptised at Wells, Norfolk 17th April 1814, son of Robert & Martha Skeet.  Robert was a Tailor. (ancestry image)

Robert Skeet married Martha Ramon at Wells, Norfolk 1 Dec 1806  (IGI)

Hi Joan

Thanks for taking the time to relpy to me.  I still don't know if I'm any further forward but youv'e certainly given me something to go on.  Don't know how I'll be able to find out for sure as albert was a bigamist and probably took great care in hiding his past after coming to Londonderry.  I'll certainly try looking up similar names too - that's a great tip.

Thanks again, I'll keep looking
