Thank you Wozzle - don't worry about checking the census with the Bridgen family.  Think I'd rather just stick with our Hyde family name - don't want to create any more puzzles at this early stage.
and....... Thanks to you too gortonboy for the info on Albert's details - this is certainly news that up to now, we've never known.  Because he was groomsman for our grandfather Daniel Wm. I wonder if they spoke of their ventures in the African wars;  nothing was ever spoken about that era amongst their family here in Auckland N.Z.
As a matter on interest a news clip I have here reads:  After 57 years service etc.etc.  Albert retired. Not only did he serve in the Boer War but again was involved in the 19114-1918 war and served in the Essex regiment as Captain.
Other sons in the 1881 census were Alfred J. Frederick C and Henry F. Hyde
Could any of these boys have also been involved in the African wars as is noted on the newspaper wedding description in 1902.
I greatly appreciate  the assistance everyone  has given us - it is opening up an entirely new interest that has us waiting for the next news item.
Pamela-anne.

Many thanks gortonboy - fascinating information.
I'll take you up on your offer re his children;  anything you can find would be most appreciated.
Grandfather Daniel named his 2nd son Frederick Henry, after his brothers.
He named his elder son Daniel (my father in law) - obviously after his own.
