Chepstow Parish records - WALTERS

Hi,

I am pretty new to Welsh genealogy as I have just found my first Welsh ancestor 

I am not sure where to start looking now though, I have a Cecilia or Sicilia Walters born around 1810 in Chepstow, Monmouthshire (this is according to the 1851 census)

I would really love to find out more about her and her family but I have nothing more to go on yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Jenny,

I cannot see your ancestor in the IGI so it looks as if you will need to refer to parish records. 

Gwent Record Office, http://www.llgc.org.uk/cac/cac0004.htm, should hold the records for Chepstow, although it is possible that Gloucester, http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleID=1348, may also be worth a try.

Thanks for the advice. I have just found out that her father was Morgan Walters (farmer) so I will have a bit of a look around now I have something to go on..

Hi Jenny,

Don't know if this is much help but I've just discovered that my 4xgt grandmother was probably Eliza Waters born in Chepstow sometime between 1805-1810.

I have found this entry on IGI - I was looking at Wales but Monmouthshire comes under England! 

Enter batch number C033591 and father's name Morgan Waters.  Sorry I tried to put a link but it doesn't seem to work.

Could this Waters family have anything to do with yours?

Hi Debbie,

This is a definate possibility - I have my Cecelia Walters with so many name variations, both first and last name, that it is not funny! Sometimes it is spelled Watters or Walters - so Waters is really not a big stretch. I wonder whether Morgan Waters was a farmer?

Hi Jenny,

I think I've found my 4xg grandparents marriage in Weston-super-Mare in 1826.  Eliza Waters and Charles Jones.  In 1851 they are living in Bath.  Eliza born Chepstow abt 1805.  I am hoping she was the daughter of Morgan & Rachel Waters baptised in 1811.  Assuming she was born 1810, this would make Eliza only 15 or 16 when she married which would possibly explain her age being 5 yrs older in 1851. 

I thought the daughter without a first name baptised in 1805 could be your Cecilia?  If so does this make us cousins?

Hi Debbie,

If she is the mystery child then yes we would be. Cecelia Walters is my ggg grandmother. She also moved away - she married William Bowden in Bristol in 1837 then moved to his home town of Instow, Devon where my gg grandfather William Henry Bowden was born in 1842.

I would love to find out more about this family you mentioned of Morgan and Rachel Waters - do you have any other records of them? Census returns etc? I would love to know if he was a farmer - as that is what her marriage states. The only clue to her age I have is the 1851 census too - she is put at 41yrs (c.1810) born Chepstow - so who knows...

There is a baptism of a Celia daughter of Morgan and Rachel Waters in 1804!

There is also a marriage index and it shows Morgan Waters married Rachel Habots 5 April 1796 in Newchurch, Monmouthshire.

Looks like we've both got a new name to add to our trees

2. Hannah Waters chr. 1 Jun 1806 Newchurch by Chepstow
3. Mary Waters chr. 11 Sept 1808 Newchurch by Chepstow
4. Elizabeth Waters chr. 27 Jan 1811 Newchurch by Chepstow

I also found.. 

Rachel Abetts chr. 27 Nov 1768 Newchurch by Chepstow
Father: William Abetts Mother: Mary

there were 2 other children too

John Abetts chr. 5 may 1763 Newchurch by Chepstow
Henry Abetts chr. 18 Aug 1766 Newchurch by Chepstow

What do you think? Habots and Abetts or Abotts could be a possibility I think
