Tracing Benjamin Rich, b1902 Holyhead
« on: Tuesday 26 July 11 14:30 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm trying to find out what happened to my great uncle Benjamin Rich, born 1902 q.e. March.  He disappeared after the 1911 census in which he was recorded as living with his mother, Mary Rich (widow) in Porthy Felin.

I have now found a person of this name, aged 16, listed in GRO Marine Deaths Indices 1903-1965 page 221 as having died on SS Kenmare in 1917.  Kenmare sailed between Cork and Liverpool and was eventually torpedoed in the Irish Sea in 1918.  Given the age of this Benjamin and the locality, it would appear to be most probably my great uncle.

Does anyone have, or know how to obtain more information on this particular death without having to resort to purchasing a death certificate?  Grateful for any help.

Hi Wilcoxon

Can't thank you enough for this - I'd never have thought of looking on the CWGC site.  Matter now totally resolved.

Cae - thanks also for your help although, just this once, it didn't lead anywhere.

I'm indebted to you both.

Hope to visit Anglesey again later this year - maybe I can meet up with anyone in the area.

Hi
In the course of my research into the sinking in the Irish Sea, Sat. 2nd March 1918, of the SS Kenmare I came across your discussion thread and thought you might appreciate the following information. SS KenmAre was registered in Cork and owned by The City of Cork Steam Packet Co. The SS KenmOre was registered in Liverpool, owned by the Johnston Shipping Line and on Sun 26th August 1917 was torpedoed and sunk to the north of Inishtrahull off the coast of Donegal. Further information can be found at;
SS KenmOre wreck location and details:
http://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?11868
SS KenmAre wreck site and details:
http://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?11375
CWGC entry for Second Cook Benjamin Rich lost 26th August 1917, same date as the sinking of SS Kenmore;

Hoping this information is of some use, with my best regards,
David G. J.

Hi David

Thanks very much for pointing out this discrepancy - I have checked my information again and fully agree that Benjamin was on the KenmOre!

With very best wishes
