[Completed] DATING of this tintype
« on: Tuesday 26 July 11 18:57 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm new here but have already seen the great work done by the members.  I am hoping others can help narrow down the date of this family photo I recently obtained.

It's a tintype with a black lacquered back, 2.5 x 3.5 inches in size.  I believe the subjects are from my family branch that lived in the Quebec area (Lacolle to be exact) in the 1800's up until 1900-1902 when they moved to New England.

I can see a wedding ring (reversed due to the tintype) on the woman's hand.  Also visible behind the older child is the base of a head-brace.  You can see the child's leg moved but her head remained steady!

Any other clues based on the clothing styles or other aspects of the photo?

Thank you.

Early - mid 1880's.
I'll put them the right way round first.
The little girl looks the most fashionable, short skirt with a low sash & lacy bloomers sticking out was the style at this time.
Mother appears to be wearing a Dolman which is a sort of cape with armlets in usually just fastened at the top.It was about the only coat a woman could wear to accommodate the bustle.

Jim - thank you for the quick reply and useful information.  The dates you mention actually match up with my theory of who might be in the picture.

Even though I have children of my own, I'm not the best at estimating ages...  :)  What does everyone think as far as the approximate ages of the baby and girl in this photo?  I'm sure the baby is less than 1 year old.  The girl... maybe 2 or 3?  Or am I way off?

One more thing I've noticed: while the girl seemed to be moving (blurriness in her legs), the baby is very still.  Seems strange to me because my infant kids were so fidgety.  Maybe he/she was sleeping in the mother's arms?

Hi
I'd say the baby looks about 6-8mths and the girl about 3-4yrs.  :)

Thank you again for the responses.  This has helped me greatly.  I now think I know who is in the photo (my great-great grandmother & her 1st 2 children).  The dates and people "fit" if the girl in the dress is less than 3 years old - hard to tell for sure.
