In actual fact this does happen to be the right one.  He just didn't marry as early as I thought.  So thanks for your help.

You are spot on there.  It is Hillmoor.  I visited the area in March, and quite by accident I have in the edge of a photo the sign to Hillmoor.  My family were at Culmpyne Barton in 1880's....your wife would probably know it well.  I bet she could tell me a thing or two about the area!  She is quite welcome to send me a personal message through here.

Hi,  I am Phils wife. Regarding Hillmoor.  I lived at Hillmoor House in 1941-42, and attended Culmstock School being 8-9 years old at the time, the Headmaster's name was Mr Bull.  My mother leased Hillmoor House and conducted a guest house from there.  I can remember the name of the postman's family, which was Pike, who lived in a cottage opposite Hillmoor House,  also the Grocer in Culmstock who's name was Strawbridge, there was also the Kerslake family living in Culmstock.  I used to play at the Old Mill in Culmstock, which was obsolete.

I made a return visit from Australia in 1990, things had not changed in the area, I visited Hillmoor House, and met the owner who showed me through the house.  I also spoke with the neihbours who remembered the Pike family.

My mother eventually worked at Dunkswell Airfield, which I believe was about Ten miles away.

Regards Jessie

I did not realize you were also here in Oz!  I don't think too much has EVER changed in Culmstock......but that can be a good thing when you do family history.  My connection to the area only lasted till the mid 1880's, although one family member married into the Blackmore family and was in Churchstanton (which is also not far away) in early 1900's.  I will have to wait till the next census becomes available to track them any further, I think.
