Can anyone suggest where I might find a death record for Margaret Thomas who lived in Swansea and was alive in 1861 aged 88?

Hi,

On her marriage & death certs she is just Margaret Williams (Nee Edwards) but if the Margaret from Tontine Street is right one she is Margaret Jane Edmonds.

The problem I have is I cannot find a birth that fits for Margaret Edwards in Swansea between 1847 - 1850.

Margaret Jane Edmonds was living in Tontine Street in 1861 but Margaret Edwards marriage didn't happen until 1869. Am I making a too big leap of faith?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry.   I have just realised I didn't answer your question.  She is just Margaret Thomas.

Is this the Margaret Thomas and Margaret "S Edwards"/Margaret "J Edmonds"?

!861 Census (RG09  4106  63  24)
Address 44 Tontine Street

Margaret Thomas, Head, Widow, 88, Pauper, Llandilo
Margaret S Edwards, G/Daughter, 10, Swansea

FindMyPast has transcribed as "Margaret S Edwards" but the original image looks like " Margaret J Edmonds"

regards

Regarding Margaret Thomas' death between Mar Qtr 1861 and Sep Qtr 1865 when age at death begins to appear, FreeBMD lists the death of 15 Margaret Thomas' in Swansea.

After the age of death begins to appear against the name, I cannot find a Margaret Thomas whose age at death would fit your Margaret age 88 in 1861.

Of course she may not have died in Swansea.

Will check the Cambrian Index as a starter.

Hi,

She married in 1869 and her age is shown as 20 which made her born 1849 but on her death cert her age is shown as 34. She died in Mar 1881 so that makes her born 1847. I also have her on the 1871 census as 23 which makes her birth abt 1848. I haven't been able to find a birth which matches if she really was born in Swansea. Which the census says she does

Having just written this all down I now think that Margaret J Edwards/Edmonds  in Tontine St, is unlikely to be her since she seems to have been born abt 1850.

FreeBMD has the birth registration of Margaret Jane Edmonds, December Qtr 1849, Swansea, 25 509.

The 1861 Census entry has a Margaret J Edmonds, age 10, born Swansea, living with her grandmother Margaret Thomas, age 88.

Ages given on Census returns, Marriage and Death Certificates can, and do, differ from the true age of the individual, often quite considerably.

If you have her marriage cert, and her father is recorded on there, you should be able to confirm her birth by sending for the 1849 birth cert.
